Chapman is one of the most popular and flavorful drink in Nigeria which is mostly served at weddings, parties, restaurants, and bars etc. It is loved by many because it is very refreshing and tasty.

This red colour drink which is occasionally referred to as a non-alcoholic punch, Chapman drink is basically made with Fanta (orange soda), 7up or Sprite (Lemon & lime soda), grenadine syrup or Ribena which is a black currant concentrate, Angostura bitters, and it is usually garnished with citrus fruits and cucumber slices.

It is traditionally prepared and served in a large mug with ice cubes and a few slices of cucumber. It can also be prepared with alcohol; it can be prepared with a hint of rum or vodka (This is for people who prefer alcoholic chapman drink).

I know you might be wandering about a lot of things about this drink especially about the ingredients used, because some of the ingredients might be new to you especially the grenadine syrup and Angostura bitters:

  • Grenadine syrup is a usually used to prepare non-alcoholic drink in a bar. This non – alcoholic bar syrup is known for its flavor which is both sweet and tart and for its deep red color. It is also used as a common ingredient used in other cocktail drinks.
  • Angostura bitters is an herbal alcoholic mixture which is made with herbs, spices and gentian. It is majorly used in flavoring drinks. Angostura bitters are tremendously concentrated mixture and it contains about 44.7% volume of alcohol.
  • It cannot be ingested without been diluted and it is used in small quantities for flavoring. Angostura bitter is a key ingredient in making many cocktail drinks. It was originally used to help with stomach upset in a group of army called Simon Bolivar’s army, it later became popular and extended to the United states, and it is mostly served with whiskey cocktails there. It is used to prepare champagne cocktail and few drops of angostura bitters is added to a sugar cube. Some people don’t use angostura because of its alcoholic content, but your chapman is never complete without it.



It is believed that chapman was originated by a bartender at Ikoyi club and his name was shapman, so I believe that the drink was named after him.

Aside for from the fact this drink is loved by many because of its taste; it also loved because it is easy to prepare (no special skill is required), there are many different versions of it so you don’t need make it in a particular way or style, you can make it in any quantity.


  • 1 cup Grenadine Syrup
  • 2 tbsp. of Angostura Bitters (you can also use Alomo bitters if you don’t have angostura)
  •  2 bottles of 35 cl Fanta Orange
  • 2 bottles of 35 cl Sprite or 7up
  • 0.25l of Ribena (Optional)
  • an Orange
  • one lemon
  • Ice cubes
  • 7 thin slices of cucumber
  • You need a large mug to make your chapman
  • 3 dimpled small mugs( for serving your chapman)

Things to do before making your chapman

  • Make your ice cubes by either using water or by using a mixture of Fanta and 7up or sprite.
  • Put your Fanta, Sprite and Grenadine syrup in the fridge to chill.
  • Cut your orange and lemon into two equal halves each then cut one half of each citrus fruit into thin slices. Keep the other halves; they are to be squeezed into the drink.


  • Take out your already made ice cubes from the fridge and put few ice cubes in your large mug.
  • Pour one cup of grenadine syrup into the mug.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of Angostura Bitters or Alomo bitters
  • Squeeze the juice of your orange and lemon into the mixture.
  • Add in the two bottles of Fanta and sprite into the mug
  • Add in your Ribena blackcurrant if you are using one.
  • Pour out the chapman into the small mugs for serving, remember not to fill the mug to the brim because of the garnishing you are going to use.
  • Add the sliced garnishing’s: orange, cucumber and lemons. You can also add any fruit of your choice.
  • Your refreshing chapman is ready, put in straw and sip your drink.
  • It is best enjoyed on sunny day or at night hanging out with friends.
